Panoramic Peekskill - Nestor Madalengoita
Nestor Madalengoitia, born in Lima, Peru in 1959, moved to the United States in 1986 and now resides in Poughkeepsie, New York. Drawing inspiration from the intricate pre-Columbian Peruvian Paracas tapestry, Madalengoitia has exhibited his works in New York City, the Hudson Valley, and Lima, Peru. His art includes murals that adorn public spaces in Poughkeepsie and other locations such as Washington D.C., Sussex, Canada, the Florida Keys, and his native Peru.
Madalengoitia’s mural in Peekskill captures a panoramic view of the city, inspired by a print from the early 1900s. The artwork evokes the feel of an old daguerreotype and is created using a unique technique. He first applies black acrylic to the silver side of insulation board, and then skillfully ‘draws’ by scraping away the black paint with plastic utensils like knives, spoons, and credit cards. This etching method, also used in his current series of scratchboard drawings, gives the mural its distinct, textured appearance.
