Reminder - Geoff Feder

Reminder was created by Geoff Feder from the metal from the gun buyback program in Peekskill.

Geoff Feder said about his work, “I’m going to share with you how I came to making this sculpture and the thoughts behind it. Metal Art using found objects is a very difficult task, because the recognizable parts that you use will always carry their history and symbolism into the final piece. The use of gun parts for sculpture is by far the toughest challenge I’ve faced. This is actually the second iteration of the original idea. I hated the first one. So I cut it apart and started over.

You’ve heard common expressions we use in everyday like “forging a relationship.”

Forging is taking a piece of steel heating it up and using a hammer and anvil to transform the mass and volume. Generally speaking its not really adding or cutting away material. Very similar to working with clay. So I cut the usable parts off the guns and forged them down to a uniform thickness then forged them to shape creating a ribbon, titled “Reminder”.

Pinned ribbons are symbols of remembrance or awareness. i wanted to forge these guns and transform their history, shape, mass and volume. Maybe with community and thoughtfulness we can take our shared experiences and forge new peaceful future.”
