Peekskill Dragonfly - Mark Andreas

Peekskill Dragonfly by Mark Andreas is an interactive sculpture made of cedar, ash wood, painted stainless steel, and solar panels. The artwork is designed to respond to environmental forces, becoming dynamic when water is added to its basin during the warmer months. As the basin fills, the sculpture's wings rise, mimicking the movement of sailing ships on the Hudson River. Over time, the water is gradually pumped out through capillary action, causing the wings to slowly fold down, ready to repeat the cycle when refilled. The sculpture remains dormant in winter to protect it from the cold. Andreas, inspired by his background in boat building and naturalism, creates art that explores the relationship between time, craftsmanship, and technology.

Note: This artwork has not opened its wings in a long time.
